For fresh and cold-water anglers, be sure to check the water temperature BEFORE you fish AND throughout the day! If it’s approaching 64-65 degrees (F), give the fish a rest. Mornings are best, know your local “hoot owl” rules, and think about the FUTURE of the fisheries. The few bucks spent on a thermometer is worth every penny!
If temps are high, other options to “stay in the game” of fly fishing can include:
- explore high mountain water
- fish for local, warm-water species (bass, carp, etc.)
- volunteer
- tie flies
- practice casting
- practice knots
- travel to a destination (one Instagram follower reminded us that Alaska is a great place to be when temps are high in the mainland!!)
